He raised his hands in surrender but was still smiling.<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>\u201cListen,\u201d he said. \u201cYou know I\u2019m your biggest fan, right?\u201d<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>\u201cI thought you were up until about ten minutes ago,\u201d she shot back at her old boss.<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>He lowered his hands, still smiling but looking a little more serious.<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>\u201cCome on, Bobbie, do you really think I\u2019m laughing at you? This is classic Xavier. That\u2019s what\u2019s got me laughing. I\u2019m just glad that the new hot-shot HSE manager\u2019s going to have to deal with this instead of me, now that I\u2019m retired and everything.\u201d<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>\u201cI\u2019m the new HSE manager,\u201d she responded through gritted teeth.<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>\u201cLike I said,\u201d he grinned, \u201ca real hot-shot.\u201d<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>Jim leaned forward, looking dead serious now.<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>\u201cLook, Bobbie, you\u2019re all over this. Do you think I was going to retire and recommend that you take over just to make you feel good? Of course not! You\u2019d picked up everything that I knew in your first couple of years and you were way ahead of me long before it was time for me to step aside. So yeah, you are a hot-shot but in a good way.\u201d<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>He paused for a sip of coffee and grimaced.\u00a0<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>\u201cUgh! This is awful. Let me freshen this up and let\u2019s talk seriously about what\u2019s on your mind.\u201d<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>Once Jim was back and settled, Bobbie recounted the meeting she had had with Xavier, the firm\u2019s owner, earlier that day.<\/em>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>- - - - -<\/em><\/p>\r\n<em>\u2018Today is going to be a good day,\u2019 Bobbie thought to herself as she pulled into the parking lot outside the XYZ Co offices. She could see people setting up in the fabrication yard and sparks and flashes inside the main shop: the welders were already busy. The new contract for one of the oil majors was just getting underway and everyone was excited about the opportunity to deploy their new deepwater technology on such a large scale. As HSE manager for XYZ Co, the contract wasn\u2019t as important to her as the opportunity to show off their systems when the client\u2019s HSE team came around later that day.<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>By noon, she was back at her desk, visit over and able to start to clear the emails that had mounted up that morning, But even a full inbox couldn\u2019t dampen her spirits. The HSE team had been impressed with the XYZ Co safety set-up and had described it as one of the best they\u2019d seen.\u00a0<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>\u2018A good day indeed,\u2019 she thought. \u2018I should tell Jim. He\u2019d get a kick out of hearing that kind of praise.\u2019<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>As she cleared the backlog of mail, she noticed a message pop up from Debbie, the CEO\u2019s PA, asking if she could meet Xavier at short notice to discuss something \u201curgent\u201d.<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>\u2018No problem\u2019 she replied with a smiley face at the end: Xavier was a great boss but he did have a habit of derailing everyone\u2019s projects with his new ideas. Bobbie knew that this \u201curgent\u201d project would probably be forgotten by the weekend but she was still curious to hear what the CEO had on his mind. She was looking for a new challenge to get her teeth into.<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>Half an hour later she checked in with Debbie and chatted for a few minutes before heading into Xavier\u2019s office. Having only been there for five years, Bobbie was still something of a \u2018new\u2019 employee relatively speaking: most other employees had been there for 10 years or more. Debbie had been there since the beginning, keeping everything running as a mix of PA to the CEO, Drill Sergeant, and big sister.<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>\u201cHe\u2019s in a very good mood,\u201d she told Bobbie, \u201cbut I have no idea what today\u2019s big idea is. Good luck!\u201d\u00a0<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>As soon as Bobbie entered Xavier\u2019s office, he jumped out of his seat.<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>\u201cThere she is! They are sticklers for the rules. You did us proud today.\u201d<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>He waved her into a seat as he sat back down.<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>\u201cThanks Boss,\u201d she started, \u201cbut you know it wasn\u2019t just me. Everyone pulled together to get those systems in place and\u00a0 Jim left things in good shape.\u201d<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>\u201cJim!?! That old bum? You\u2019ve been running the HSE shop for years - this is your work. Nothing to do with that antique.\u201d<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>They both grinned as he abused her former boss who also happened to be one of Xavier\u2019s oldest friends and Debbie\u2019s husband.<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>Xavier leaned in and looked at her seriously.<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>\u201cListen Bobbie, I\u2019m serious. Today\u2019s visit was a big deal and we came out of it with flying colors. A big part of that was your doing so thank you. I know we all play a part in safety but you\u2019ve done amazing work here keeping us safe and making us more effective. I don\u2019t know if we would have landed this contract without your input. So thank you.\u201d<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>\u201cThanks Xavier, that means a lot,\u201d she replied. \u201cAnyway, was that what was so urgent? Telling me how great I am?\u201d<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>Xavier smiled. \u201cWell, that is important but it\u2019s not the urgent thing.\u201d<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>He leaned back and launched into his story.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>\u201cSo here\u2019s the deal, Bobbie.\u00a0 After we completed the tour, I was shooting the breeze with Frank, the head of the inspection team. We worked together years ago offshore and we were busy telling each other how old we look.\u201d<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>\u201cAnyway, we got a bit more serious and were discussing the industry and at one point he asked me what keeps me up at night.\u00a0 Well, that stumped me a bit, as I have to confess I sleep pretty well when my back\u2019s not bothering me, so I just replied that the Texans starting line-up always causes me some anxiety and we had a good laugh.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>\u201cBut here\u2019s the thing Bobbie, I\u2019m getting asked this kind of question more and more. I have a good handle on the day-to-day in the plant and the financials but things are moving pretty fast in the business. The technology is changing faster than I can keep up with sometimes, we\u2019ve got our facility in Janwick[footnote]Janwick is a fictitious place in West Africa I use for examples - don't worry if you can't find it on the map.[\/footnote] now and we seem to have different export regulations every couple of years.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>\u201cBasically, we need to have a better handle on our risks.\u00a0 I think we manage things pretty well on a day-to-day basis and are good at firefighting when things go wrong but I think we need to formalize things a bit.\u201d<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>He leaned forward and planted his elbows on the desk, looking her straight in the eye.<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>\u201cSo what do you say, can you put together a risk assessment of the business for me? I\u2019d like to have something to discuss at the next Board meeting in the middle of October.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>After a bit more discussion, Bobbie headed back to her office knowing three things about the project: she had to conduct a risk assessment, she had three weeks to do it and she had no idea what that entailed\u2026 .<\/em>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>- - - - -<\/em><\/p>\r\n<em>Jim let out a low whistle when she was done retelling the earlier part of her day and sat quietly for a moment.<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>Suddenly, he gave a big grin.<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>\u201cGreat work, kid. I\u2019m super proud of you. No, don\u2019t interrupt. Those guys kicked my ass the last time they came around. It was just before you started and they gave me a hard time saying that we were \u2018adequate\u2019 but that they had some concerns in the long term about our ability to handle a complex contract. We didn\u2019t lose the contract then just because of HSE but I know I certainly didn\u2019t help.\u201d<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>\u201cOk, so let\u2019s get back to what\u2019s on your mind. He wants a risk assessment of the whole business in three weeks? Well, that is a pretty sizeable task, I guess. But you\u2019ve done assessments before. What\u2019s your concern?\u201d<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>Bobbie sighed.<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>\u201cJim, this is an assessment of the whole business. HSE, operations, marketing, finance, supply chain. You name it, he wants it covered. That\u2019s huge. Plus, what do I know about our marketing or supply chain? I don\u2019t touch that stuff.\u201d<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>Jim thought for a while until he gave a sly smile.<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>\u201cThat\u2019s the point, I think. Xavier wants someone who knows the firm but doesn\u2019t get involved in the business side to do the assessment. Think about it. Who else could do this and be objective? Your portfolio is audited to death and you\u2019ve passed with flying colors so there\u2019s not going to be any surprises there. But what about our financial risks, or R&amp;D or things we need to think about in Janwick? Who else could review that without being biased.\u201d<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>He paused before continuing.<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>\u201cPlus Xavier knows you are all about systems and processes. Honestly, I don\u2019t think anyone else could do this.\u201d<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>\u201cBut I don\u2019t know where to start\u201d she replied in frustration. \u201cAnd why three weeks? He\u2019s been like that since we started the firm back in the 70s. But this tight timeline is a good thing. The old goat won\u2019t have time to get distracted by something else in the meantime. If it was due in three months, you\u2019d be on your fourth \u201curgent\u201d project before you finished this one.
